epinephrine

The FDA has recently declared a nationwide EpiPen shortage. EpiPen is a medication produced by the pharmaceutical company, Mylan. It delivers the life-saving drug, epinephrine, for treatment of severe allergic reactions. More recently, even the generic epinephrine auto-injector, Adrenaclick, has been added to the list of shortages.

These spot shortages do not necessarily mean that patients cannot get EpiPens, but that it may be harder and that one may need to use an alternative to EpiPen.

Patients with EpiPens should look at their EpiPen expiration dates so that they have enough time to get another one before their current one expires. There is an alternative to the EpiPen which is the Auvi-Q. Currently, there are no reported shortages for the Auvi Q.

If you or your child is in need of a new prescription for an epinephrine auto-injector or have further questions, please schedule an appointment with one of our allergists.
