atopic dermatitis

Eczema,or atopic dermatitis, is a chronic and inflammatory skin condition that usually begins during childhood. It can be associated with skin infections as well as other allergic disorders such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, and food allergies. Topical therapies previously were the mainstay of treatment, but have been associated with side effects including thinning of the skin. Dupixent is a relatively new “biologic” that treats moderate to severe eczema from within. A biologic is a non-steroid treatment that acts to block inflammatory mediators of eczema in a very specific way. In studies with this medication, more than a third of treated patients had clear or almost clear skin in 16 weeks, and more than a half saw significant skin improvement. Dupixent is F.D.A. approved for the treatment of moderate to severe atopic dermatitis in adults. Side effects of the medication are rare but can include allergic reactions and eye problems. If you think you may qualify for this medication, please set up an appointment with one of our allergists for further evaluation.
